Short version of doctors’/staff CVs

Professor Dr. Iliya Vatev, MD, PhD
Graduated in Medicine – Diplom M.D./Licence to practice medicine No 012110/1972, Sofia Higher Medical Institute. In 1973, elected Assistant-Professor in Department of Biology, Sofia Medical Academy. At 26, conducting experimental work on the field of reproductive biology/immunology and in vitro fertilization techniques, a new departure for Bulgaria. In 1982 received Bulgaria’s National Award in Medicine for the first experimental achievements in this field (Diplom No 80/29.01.1982).On return from long term research fellowship in Paris on reproduction in mammals (specialization in INSERM–Centre d’Immuno-Parthologie, Hopitals Saint Antoine and Antoine Beclaire, Topics: “Immunology of gestation, in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer in rodents”, Adviser: Prof. Guy Andre Voisin) set in motion the application of in vitro fertilization techniques as a cure for severe cases of  human infertility.

In 1985, took a doctorate- Ph.D. in Medicine (Ph.D. Thesis: “Biological and Immunological Studies on in vitro Fertilization in Some Mammals”) and, following the birth of his - and Bulgaria’s - first ‘test-tube babies’, in January 1998, was elected Associate Professor and Head of Human IVF-ET Unit at the same department.

Worked in Italy on assisted reproduction (ART) under a NATO Invited Professors Fellowship (Topic: “Assisted Fertilization/ICSI”, Reproductive Medicine Unit, University of Bologna, Italy; Advisor: Prof. Carlo Flamigni) and between 1991-1998 has visited, by invitation, leading ART centers in all continents (among them around 2.5 years work at Geniki Kliniki IVF Center, Thessaloniki, Greece ; Advisors: Prof S. Mantalenakis, Dean of Aristotelian University, Thessaloniki and Assoc. Prof. B. Tharlatzis).
In 2001 Dr Vatev founded Medical Centre “Technobios” Ltd – the centre offers  treatment of human infertility using  the basic techniques, whose application in Bulgaria was introduced by the Cenre’s founder: in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET); intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and other micromanipulation techniques ; intrauterine insemination with husband’s or partner’s in vitro treated sperm. For IVF-ET and related methods the average success rate is usually above 30-33% (taken in home babies).
Till 2012 year has contributed to birth, via ART and others in vitro fertilization techniques (conduct the procedure in person), of over 1.300 babies in Bulgaria and outside the country.

In 1999 till now elected Head of the Department of Biology at Sofia Medical University and was 8 years’ membership of the Faculty Board at the same university.

Was Chief Researcher in a range of ART projects under the aegis of the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science and Sofia Medical University and took part in two EU-funded projects  led by the University of Swansea (Wales) and City University, (London) (see list of publications and other documents including Sofia Medical University website :http://medfac.mu-sofia.com/

Is author/co-author of several textbooks on medical biology for students of medicine and other medical disciplines  and was scientific advisor for 5  PH.D. Thesises in the field of ART .

Dr Vatev pioneered the development and application of ART techniques and especially in vitro fertilization methods in his country (first Bulgarian in vitro-babies born in 1988 - Vatev I.: High Fertilization Rate in Human in vitro Fertilization Procedure upon Using a Chemically Defined Medium. Compt. Rend Acad. Bulg. Sci.; 1987, 40, 101-104. ; Vatev I.: J. in vitro Fert. Embryo Transfer. 1988, 5, 48-49 & 54. ; Vatev et al.: BJMG,1998, 3, 115-119, also see references in section scientific publications). In 1988 he was awarded an international Certificate from World Intellectual Property Organization (Sofia WIPO Prize/03.04.1988) for the method in vitro fertilization of human ova and transfer of embryos in Bulgaria. As chief coordinator he helped  to set up other ART centers in Bulgaria (between them the first one in the country). His laboratory has afforded training to many Bulgarian and some foreign ART specialists. For nearly 30 years he has lectured on General and Reproductive Biology (also medical genetics and comparative anatomy) to medical students and recently years to post-graduates doctors including ginaecologists.
Member of many Bulgarian and foreign ART Societies: European Society of Human Reproduction and Embriology, Societe Francais pour L’Etude de la Fertilite, American Society for Reproductive Medicine, Editorial Board of International Journal “Assisted Reprod. Technology/Andrology” etc.
